Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - Movie Review

I'm not the biggest fan of the Pirates franchise, but I don't really have any personal beef with them. I just find them kinda average, and it was the same with this one. However, I did have fun watching it and if you want to know more, just hit the jump!

Plot
The movie is easy enough to follow, with the groups all going for the same goal, the Fountain of Youth. The only problem with it is that it is three different groups. The Spanish could have very well not have been in the movie at all and no difference would have come out of it. When there are so many expendable characters like that, the plot doesn't know what to do with them. With a book, detail is fine, but too much can really hinder a movie, and I feel that it did here. The mermaid romance subplot also hurt the pacing a bit, and that really wasn't needed either. It was still better than the last movie but there's the problem of trying to do too much. Blackbeard has zombies because...why?

Characters
Jack is tons of fun, as usual. He reminds me a lot of Captain Marvelous where he'll do whatever he feels like, though he's definitely not the leader type. Angelica is alright as a counterpart to Jack, and Blackbeard was just selfish to the core - arguably, a true pirate. Everyone else...well, I just wasn't invested enough to care about them. The movie never leaves room to get used to anyone else and there are just too many people. There are also no real defining moments for most of them, so it's hard to feel bad whenever someone dies or something of the sort.

Music
That song you love is in there, of course. Many, many times. Hans Zimmer does as good of a job as you expect, and the music is large and booming. Probably the best part of the movie.

Action
Given that this is a Pirates movie, you want a lot of this. For what it's worth, it's very good and again better than the third movie. I would have been okay if there was a little more. The stunts were creative at times which really helped. I kinda wish there were more things than just swords clashing all the time, use guns or something...but I'll take it since I wasn't bored at any time.

Overall
Not really plagued by anything, but nothing special. A popcorn movie, really. It's not going to win any awards but for 5 bucks it was good enough. A good fun movie that really could have gone ahead and played without any dialogue and would have been just as good. Hopefully the end of the movies, as it was a decent end, but knowing the team...
And since everyone is expecting me to address this - I like Gokaiger a lot better. This pirate movie's gonna be nothing compared to 199 Heroes.
Score: 5/10

  1. This movie pales in comparison to the first. It is not as good as the second or third either. It is bad enough that I actually had to stop watching it and take a break. It just seems cheesy to the point of being stupid. There are a few scenes that make it watchable though. The mermaid scene is really cool and reminds me of the quality of the first movie alot.
