Captain America - Movie Review

LUCAS LEE LUCAS LEE LUCAS LEE.
LEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

...Okay, you got me. That is not all this review is going to be. But it was worth a shot.
So. The last Marvel movie before the event of the year, The Avengers. Am I excited? Oh heck yeah, you better believe it. But that is neither here nor there. Except it is. Because the trailer was at the end of this movie. And it was rad.
ANYWAY. Let's get this show on the road.

Old poster blibbity blah

Plot
As a war movie, you pretty much know what to expect. As a Marvel and Captain America movie, I think it worked alright. It's a pretty unique story in their cinematic universe, so it helps expand the world more, which is always fun.

I had a few problems with the pacing - some things went by too fast, others dragged a little. Didn't ruin the movie, but the story beats were pretty easy to hit.

Really don't think Red Skull is dead, he went out through the Cosmic Cube, after all. Loki went sorta the same way and look at him! The only thing that made Skull a threatening villain were his weapons, though, and never was the Captain in more danger than those around him except for a few scenes. I kinda think a hero should be expected to dive into danger, because you know he's gonna get out okay.

Sets were fun, and the movie feels like the time period it's set in, which is good. Even though anyone who knows how the story of Cap goes knows what happens to him at movie's end, I still like the steady rise of how he becomes a hero and then the sudden drop - quite literally - at the end. I still like the vibe from Vs. Capcom 3's Captain better, but Evans does a fine job.

Characters
Lucas Lee is pretty great. Er, I mean, Steve Rogers is pretty great. Wait...no, the Captain is pretty great. Okay, last time I make that joke, promise. Either way, you get a good amount of time to sympathize with him and the choices he makes. He really is a war hero, built to fight for his country to the end. Tommy Lee Jones is fun too, and has a good amount of funny moments. The agent whatever-her-name-is is alright, and there are some moments for her. Everyone else is pretty much there to fill a quota, though. We're not given enough time with everyone, but it's still a fun ride to follow Cap's life.
Like I said, Red Skull isn't a very threatening villain physically, but his huge ambitions and such work well in the setting of World War II. It really feels like a bigger conflict, even if there were some hiccups. Some of the dialogue didn't feel that 40's either. Still, not terrible and our main cast puts in spirited performances.

Music
This is always my shortest section...well, it works. There's a lot of cool reggae-style stuff like there was in the 40's, and the Captain America anthem is pretty cool. There are also good tension-building tracks, though they're not exceptional.

Action
It's a war movie...thankfully, Cap gets plenty of times to shine. For a war movie, though, it's really just a lot of things we've seen before. Fights don't drag much, so that's good. I was a little disappointed in the final showdown, was hard to see. Liked it enough.

Overall
As a movie alone, it's alright, mostly average. As a final hoorah before The Avengers, this was a good one to end on. Filled with a lot of cool history-looking things and some good action and acting. A lot like Thor, with some good casting, but all-in-all, recommended. After watching it twice, I've decided it is definitely worth a viewer's time. Also, the post-credits trailer adds 2 points because it was that good.
Score: 8/10
With Avengers trailer: 10/10
